Botulinum toxin treatment -Botox®, Azzalure® and Dysport®
Treatment with Botulinum toxin (known as Botox® or Azzalure® and Dysport®, ) is the most popular non surgical facial treatment used worldwide. Excessive contraction and activity of the muscles of facial expression can lead to the formation of lines and wrinkles, especially in the forehead and around the eyes (crow’s feet). Botox® blocks the release of the substance (acetylcholine) responsible for nerve impulses which cause muscle contraction.
By injecting Botox® into the affected area the muscle responsible for wrinkling, become less active giving the face a more refreshed appearance. The wrinkles become smoother or may even disappear.
Initial effects can be felt within 48-72 hours with the maximum effect reached in about 2 weeks. A review appointment will be arranged for 2-3 weeks after treatment. Botox® may not remove all lines and wrinkles. Deep set wrinkles that have been present for many years will not completely disappear.
The elasticity and quality of your skin will also determine the achievable result. Remember though that a 100% wrinkle free appearance does not always produce a natural looking result.
Treatment will reduce the appearance of existing lines however if you do not currently have visible lines treatment will also delay the appearance of these. Many people are now opting to have Botox® as a preventative treatment. Remember though that a good skin care regime is also essential to prevent photo-aging (Sunscreen and Antioxidant) Botox® is a non permanent treatment and has no known long term side effects. The effects of treatment generally last for 4-6 months, re-treatment is then required.
The most well known Botulinum toxin is known as Botox® but there are also other equally effective treatments such as Azzalure and Dysport®. They are all made using botulinum toxin and we offer Anti-Wrinkle treatments using these brands. The method and results are exactly the same.

1. What is Botox® ?
Botox® is a drug made from a neurotoxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum called botulinum toxin. It is used medically to treat certain muscular conditions and cosmetically remove wrinkles by temporarily paralyzing muscles.
As we age the muscular movements that we perform during speech or expression cause the breakdown of collagen which is the substance that provides elasticity and suppleness of the skin layers. A lack of collagen can cause the skin to sag or crease so Botox® is injected to fill the area and freeze the muscles concerned by blocking the nerve signals between the brain and the muscles.
2. The benefits of Botox®.
As the administration of Botox® is very fast, normal activities can be resumed immediately and no time has to be taken off work, no bandages are necessary and there should be no ill-effects afterwards.
Botox® is a less invasive method of evening out fine lines than having a full face lift. It is not permanent so if results are not satisfactory other methods can be sought, but it does take immediate effect.
3. How is it Administered?
Botox® is given through very fine needles that can be injected at the exact site of requirement for example fine lines or crow’s feet. This procedure may be a little uncomfortable but as the needles are so fine this should not be too much of a problem and is usually tolerable.
The person who administers the injection MUST be trained in the procedure, know the correct dosage and how to give it cleanly and safely and dispose of the equipment appropriately. Always ask to see a certificate of competence and make sure they have insurance to cover their practice.
4. Are There Any Risks?
Although Botox® has been certified as safe to use by the drug authorities, it may still be harmful if used incorrectly or administered wrongly.Do not use Botox on infected or broken skin or if you have any rashes or skin disorders.
Even though Botox® is derived from a potentially toxic substance, it is given is such small amounts that it poses no risk to health. It is gradually broken down by the body and the procedure must be repeated every few months to maintain the visual benefits.
Botox® has become extremely popular in recent years as a safer alternative to face lifts. It is not a permanent solution to fine lines and sagging skin, but appears to work well if updated every 3- 4 months.
